Airplanes

Let's Fly Away!

Many people travel daily on huge commercial airplanes, but do they truly understand the scientific concepts that allow  them this luxury?  The VANTAGE students are completing an interdisciplinary unit on airplanes, which will permit them to investigate Bernoulli's Principle and Newton's Laws through a variety of scientific experiments.  Through this unit, the students will learn the four forces that affect an airplane's actions:  lift, gravity, thrust, and drag.  VANTAGE students will create many different types of planes to experiment with an airplane's movements:  yaw, roll, and pitch.  After exploring these concepts, the VANTAGE students will be able to understand the primary controls a pilot uses to fly a plane.
