Former VB Exchange Student Shares Career Experiences with Students

On Wednesday, February 19, Dr. Hugo Rojas Corral, an exchange student from Chile at VBHS during the 1988-1989 academic year, spoke to the Spanish III and IV and Government students about his career in academia and as a government official.

Also attending the event were former Van Buren superintendent Mr. Jerrold Cramer and his wife Dee, former Van Buren treasurer Mrs. Dolores Cramer, and former Van Buren secretary Mrs. Carole Clemens, who was Rojas’s exchange “mother.”

Dr. Rojas has obtained degrees across a range of disciplines, including social sciences, sociology, law, anthropology, public policy, and political science. He currently teaches sociology of law at Alberto Hurtado University, political sociology at the Catholic University of Chile, and human rights at the University of California Study Abroad Program in Chile. Throughout his professional career, he has contributed to various sectors, working in the government of Chile and think tanks. He was a visiting scholar at Duke University and a guest professor at the University of Notre Dame. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. in Law from the University of Salamanca. He has authored over fifty peer-reviewed academic publications, underscoring his significant contributions on human rights.
